南非第一个民选总统、诺贝尔和平奖得主纳尔逊．曼德拉于 2013 年12月5日去世，享年九十五岁。曼德拉因对抗南非种族隔离制度坐了廿七年牢，1990 年获释，并在四年后当上总统。一任任期后便即卸任，这样的举动在非洲政界非常少见。
这位广受国际爱戴的领袖对文字的使用令人印象深刻。他最著名的一段话是他 1964 年瑞佛尼亚审判中在法庭所作的辩护陈词。他说：
我对抗白人统治，我也对抗黑人统治。我珍视民主自由社会，所有人能和谐共处，拥有均等的机会。我为此理想而生，也希望有朝一日能达成这个理想。但如果有必要，我也准备好为这理想而死。
